5,445 editions published between 1800 and 2022 in 55 languages and held by 30,172 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This edition includes Parts I and II complete. The backgrounds include the medieval Chapbook, the puppet play, and a surviving fragment of G.E. Lessing's Faust play. The author's plans and sketches, and a rich selection of his letters and comments to Eckermann, trace Goethe's lifelong involvement in the work, as does an analytical table showing the phases of composition. The contemporary reactions show how rapidly Faust came to be seen as a quintessential expression of German Romantic consciousness. The essays have been chosen to help readers perceive and understand Faust's extraordinary thematic and formal complexity--Cover

Goethes Egmont by
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(
Book
)
794 editions published between 1342 and 2021 in 21 languages and held by 3,886 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Egmont is a play by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, which he completed in 1788. Its dramaturgical structure, like that of his earlier 'Storm and Stress' play Gotz von Berlichingen (1773), is heavily influenced by Shakespearean tragedy. In contrast to the earlier work, the portrait in Egmont of the downfall of a man who trusts in the goodness of those around him appears to mark a shift away from 'Storm and Stress' values. In Egmont, Goethe relates the fight of Count Egmont (1522-1568) against the despotic Duke of Alba. Egmont is a famous Dutch warrior and the Duke of Alba represents the Spanish invader. Though under threat of arrest, Egmont refuses to run away and give up his ideal of liberty. Imprisoned and abandoned because of the cowardice of his people, and despite the desperate efforts of his mistress Klarchen, he is sentenced to death. Egmont is a political manifesto in which Egmont's craving for justice and national liberty is opposed to the despotic authority of the Duke of Alba. It is also a drama of destiny in which the Flemish nobleman, with fatalism, accepts the dire consequences of his straightforwardness and honesty

Götz von Berlichingen : a play by
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe(
Book
)
816 editions published between 1772 and 2022 in 14 languages and held by 2,987 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A successful 1773 drama by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, based on the memoirs of the historical adventurer-poet Gottfried or Götz von Berlichingen (c. 1480-1562). It first appeared in English in 1799 as Goetz of Berlichingen of the Iron Hand in a rather free version by Walter Scott. Goethe's plot treats events freely: while the historical Götz died an octogenarian, Goethe's hero is a free spirit, a maverick, intended to be a pillar of national integrity against a deceitful and over-refined society, and the way in which he tragically succumbs to the abstract concepts of law and justice shows the submission of the individual in that society
